The Cabaret Club is Recruiting!

Creative / Artist Wanted, Creative and Art News, Creative Opportunities

The Cabaret Club strives to go beyond expectations, creating a decadent environment which seems out of place from the real world but allows our guests the chance of escapism and one evening of fun and frivolity.  We bring some of the finest performers around into a sleepy part of Kent, to an audience who are deserving of such talent.

We launched in August 2013 to a rapturous audience and with our shows in such high demand we’re trialling a move into a bigger space at our current venue and need enthusiastic helpers to make that happen.  We were also successful in our application to create the Medway branch of Dr Sketchy’s (the world famous burlesque life drawing classes) which has further helped secure our position as a dominant cabaret force in Kent!  And we’re preparing to launch The Cabaret Club and Dr Sketchy’s for private hires so the need for a bigger team will soon be even greater.

We’re recruiting for volunteers to join our production team to help in the following areas:

  • Assistant Producers
  • Event Assistants
  • Marketing, PR and Social Media
  • Technical
  • Set Design and Prop Making

These role/s are initially unpaid but if you’d like to get some production experience and are hard-working, reliable and like having fun while you work then get in touch!  E-mail with details about yourself, what area of production interests you and what would make you a great addition to The Cabaret Club team.  Whatever your skill or passion, even if you work in a ‘regular’ job and want to try something new and exciting, then we’d love to hear from you!

You’d need to be Kent based or have transport.  This is initially an unpaid role but we are prepared to help and support you in gaining valuable work experience in a theatre production environment. You must be aged 18 or over and be available on evenings and weekends especially on the weekend of a show.

This is an exciting time for us and if you want to be a part of the journey then get in touch!

Dr Sketchy’s Burlesque Life Drawing Class // Saturday 31st May

Creative and Art Events

Dr Sketchy's logo VSN 4

We’re back for our second Dr Sketchy’s event and boy is this going to be a doozy!

Holding the event together with glitter glue and tit tape will be the incomparable Sadie Sinner and she will joined by a line-up of lovely performers just waiting to entertain and pose for your pencils.  No artistic ability is required, just turn up ready to drink, draw and have fun!

Our events will feature a wondrous selection of performers who will entertain you and then model for your sketching endeavours.  With quick fire sketching to get you started and then, as your creative juices start flowing, we’ll enter into longer sketches where you’ll really start flexing your artistic muscles (the ones you never knew you had!)

Prizes are on offer throughout the evening not based on the best piece of ‘art’ but for the hosts and performers favourite sketches so go crazy, be imaginative and release your inner Sketchy!

Sadie will be on hand to dispense drawing tips, techniques and challenges (providing someone is able to keep her wine glass topped up).

All materials are provided but you’re more than welcome to bring your own supplies if you wish (dry materials only please).

As perfectly described by Dusty Limits, long time host of Dr Sketchy’s London and leading figure on the London cabaret scene “Dr Sketchy’s is life drawing karaoke.  There is no right or wrong – you don’t go to karaoke because you’re an amazing singer.  You go to hang out with your mates and drink booze and express yourself creatively”.

Held at The Oast House Community Centre, Rainham, Kent, ME8 OER.

Tickets are £10 in advance (plus booking fee)  and £13 on the door.  Doors 7:00pm and show starts at 7:30pm.

And now for the boring bits: Our events are for over 18’s only due to adult content. We don’t offer refunds on tickets unless in exceptional circumstances. Photography will take place at our events and used for promotional purposes,  if you you don’t wish to be included in these photos please speak to a member of Sketchy’s crew before the show.

The Oast House Community Centre – Fundraising and Awareness Day – Saturday 19th April – 10AM to 6PM

Creative and Art Events

Granary Close, Rainham, Kent ME8 7SG

Funded by Ideas Test (, this free day of activities is about bringing together the existing groups and volunteers that use the building and showing the local community that this amazing community space is open and available for use.  We want to put The Oast House back on the map and prove that Rainham should become a home for the arts in Medway and Swale, widening the focus beyond Chatham and Rochester.

This day will be about raising awareness of our wonderful building, fundraising for the charity plus promoting and showcasing local creative talent, performers, makers and artists.  We also hope to use this opportunity to source new volunteers to join the existing team.

As a charity we need to generate more income to remain sustainable so this day will also help us to connect with potential funders as well as new community and arts groups who may want to hire rooms within the building.  Our long term vision is that The Oast House will provide Rainham with a multi-purpose community venue unlike anything else within the Medway towns.

Our FREE day of events and activities including

Mini Flea Market run by ‘The Rochester Flea’

Kids area run by NCT Medway plus arts and craft activities for all ages

Music, Dance, Theatre and Spoken Word Performances

Helen Ainsworth – Puppetry Making Workshop

10:00 – 13:00helenainsworthpic

Helen Ainsworth lives in London and has worked on theatre projects all over the world, travelling regularly to Portugal to perform, give workshops (in design and puppetry) and design theatre productions.   She came to perform with The Cabaret Club last year and blew the audience away with her incredible puppets, manipulation skills and sheer energy in her performance!

Helen’s construction technique is well honed but based on simple sewing methods which will create an opportunity for skills sharing as she construct the puppets in front of the workshop. Puppetry is a very accessible art form which connects emotionally to childhood memories and on another level stimulates the primeval use of imagination that animates the in-animate.

In the workshop you’ll use simple and recycled materials constructing puppets using foam, thin tights and string or thin wire and old clothes and old packaging materials. The puppets are often created by wrapping the wire/string around the tights stuffed with foam or similar cushion stuffing. The effects are striking as the photos on the website below illustrate and accessible to a wide skill base and all ages above 6 years old. Some gluing or sewing of eyes and other features is also required and the puppets constructed are rod or glove puppets.

Missy Maybe’s Burlesque Workshop

14:00 – 16:00

Missy Maybe

The Cabaret Club is thrilled to present its first burlesque workshop with the delightful Miss Maybe of Wanton Words & Burlesque Bombshells fame.

Burlesque is great for increasing your body confidence, whilst being gentle enough for everyone to participate in and best of all it is fabulous fun! It is the art of the ‘tease’ – how to move , strut and pose, and can include (though not always) an element of ‘strip tease’ – the glamorous kind that was popular in the 40’s and 50’s – cheeky , fun , sassy and sexy but not sleazy!

WHAT TO EXPECT Rest assured you won’t be required to take off all your clothes! We always work to your level of comfort and most lessons we only ever remove a glove, a boa or a shirt. Most of the moves are gentle, with options given for those with mobility issues, no dance experience is necessary. The class is always fun, and we do everything we can to make it a lovely event, relaxed and friendly with lots of laughter and chocolates!
