The Body Electric – From 16th April 2015 – Gillingham

Creative and Art Events

A new course for artists, community and activists who

care about Swale & Medway!

Creative campaigner and Higham resident Jane Trowell, has won £1300 funding from Ideas Test, the creative people and places programme for Swale and Medway to set up a new course.

It’s called ‘The Body Electric’ and is intended for people who want to make a difference. It’s unusual in that it will bring together the skills of artists, community and activists. People will learn from each other, as well as from Jane’s background in arts and campaigning. It starts 16th April at the Sunlight Centre, Gillingham.

Participants will get out and about in the area, and get stuck into creative work, learning new skills, and sharing experience and insights.

Jane says: “I’ve lived here for over 20 years and have been involved in lots of local issues. There are so many fantastic things about Medway and Swale, from Strood to Faversham, Sheerness and Grain to Wigmore. But there are also real difficulties and challenges. ‘The Body Electric’ is somewhere where we will learn to be more creative and also effective in making things better.”

Jane ran a version of this unique course 6 times in London with arts, environmental and human rights group ‘Platform’. Over 120 people benefitted, and she wants to re-make it for where she lives.

She says: “You don’t have to have any experience in the arts, campaigning or activism, nor any formal qualifications, but you do have to care about making our place fairer and healthier for everyone.”

The 10-session course is based at the Sunlight Centre in Gillingham, and starts on Thursday 16th April. It runs on 8 Thursday nights and two Saturdays.

On Gillingham, Jane says:

I’m thrilled that course is at the Sunlight Centre. Sunlight does incredible work in the community. Plus, there’s a personal connection – I recently discovered my great great great-uncle William was a blacksmith at Chatham Docks and lived in Priestfield Road, Gillingham.”

More information:

The course is £50 full, £25 concessions. To find out more and enrol, go to

Excavating Sound – 8th April 2015 – Fort Amherst – Chatham

Creative and Art Events

ef67f7c8c7047dc50470a1d6114a3db7

A free-of-charge exhibition of two sound installations are taking place in the subterranean network of tunnels underneath Fort Amherst in Chatham, Kent on the 8th of April 2015 from 2-5pm.

Produced and curated by two groups of students at the University of Kent School of Music and Fine Art, situated at the the Chatham Historic Dockyard; The installations entitled ‘If The Walls Had Ears’ and ‘Sonic Memories” explore the history of the fort through the mediums of sound and image.

‘If The Walls Had Ears’ explores the specific histories of points of interest in the tunnels and Air Raid Precaution centre, through fixed found and archival sound, as well as synthesis, creating a dualistic temporal space using the present to reflect many pasts. It is as if the tunnels are neuronal passageways in the cacophony of a brain. Curated by Thomas Graves, produced by Greg Hummell and conceptualised by Luke Margetts.

‘Sonic Memories’, in the lighter part of the the tunnels uses video material as well as sound to represent a more conscious level of processing. It explores a more general history of the fort and introduces a controlled multimodality. Produced by Philippa Hardiman, Daniel Stephens, Mikey Pavlou and Ryan Daniels.

These projects are produced by third year music, popular music, and music technology students at the School of Music and Fine Art at the University of Kent.

For more information, see their website: www.excavatingsound.com or Twitter @excavatingsound, or their sound and music page: http://www.soundandmusic.org/thesampler/event/2015/04/excavating-sound

New singing groups set-up to help improve mental health and wellbeing in West Kent and Medway

Creative and Art Events, Creative Communities and Inspiring Websites, Creative Opportunities, Editorials

cccu-logo-2colourFour newly established singing groups across west Kent and Medway are looking for members who enjoy singing and want to improve their health and mental wellbeing.

The groups have been organised by the Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health at Canterbury Christ Church University, in conjunction with Kent County Council’s Wellbeing campaign. They are free to attend and open to all. Participants will sing and enjoy well-known songs with the help of skilled group leaders, with the aim to provide opportunities for social interaction, reduce stress and increase self-confidence, fun and enjoyment. Professor Stephen Clift, Director of the Sidney De Haan Research Centre, explained: “Our research has shown that regular group singing can be beneficial for overall general wellbeing, as well having a positive impact upon specific health and mental conditions. The singing groups we have set-up in West Kent and Medway replicate a set of groups that were set-up in East Kent in 2011 to assess the impact the activity had upon mental wellbeing. We found that participants reaped the benefits of social interaction and peer support offered through the groups, which helped to clinically improve their mental health conditions. Some of the benefits experienced by the participants included, an increase in self-worth and self-confidence, a reduction in stress, an improvement in memory and concentration and a sense of inclusion. The singing groups in East Kent were successful in helping to improve the mental health wellbeing of the participants and proved to be a cost-effective health strategy. We hope to see the same positive benefits for the members of West Kent and Medway singing groups.” The groups run weekly across four venues in West Kent and Medway:

  • Chatham – Thursday, 11.00am-12.30pm, All Saints Community Centre, Magpie Hall Road, Chatham, ME4 5NE
  • Dartford – Wednesday,1.00-2.30pm, Meadowside Day Centre, Meadowside, Dartford, DA1 2RZ
  • Maidstone – Tuesday, 4.30-6.00pm, Maidstone Community Support Centre, 39-48 Marsham Street, Maidstone, ME14 1HH

Hand Of Artists Project – It’s The Talk Of The Town…

Creative and Art News, Creative Opportunities

00083b_7f6c296b59a34af3a8c626560a9e1b96.jpg_srz_727_590_75_22_0.50_1.20_0.00_jpg_srz

What do you get if you mix 108 artists, 2 decks of cards, 3 charities and an idea from a night-time road worker?

The answer is an awesome project that has inspired people to be creative from Sydney Australia to Strood, Kent and places in between.

Hand of Artists is a project created from Mr Duncan Grant who is a road worker by night and an Artist by day from Gravesend. “I thought, wouldn’t it be interesting if we got 54 different artists together and asked each one to design a different playing card,’ explains Duncan Grant local artist. ‘When I got home I posted the idea on Face book and within 48-hours we had so much interest that we had to commission two packs.”

After asking two strangers on the street to shuffle the packs, Grant randomly dealt each participant a card. “There are very few rules,” says Grant. “Everyone must stick with the card that they are given, the suit and the number of the card must be clearly visible and the size of the design must be A6, other than that the artists have free reign.”

Grant is aided in the organisation of the project by fellow Kent artist Victoria Hayman “What I love about the project is the variety,” says Hayman. “Participants are being really inventive, some are researching what the history of the card is, the meaning of the suit and the numbers and interpreting them in their own style. We have some people doing digital designs, others are drawing or painting and some are using fabric or glass.”

The project will culminate in a series of exhibitions in Chatham, Gravesend and Margate, where the final card designs will be on display and packs of artisanal cards, printed from the original designs, will be on sale to the public also side original work from artists and other wonderful things for auction. “We are hoping to print at least 500 packs of cards and the proceeds from all the events will go to the art-based charities, Art Inclusive, Headway and Artract.

There will be various card related activities at the exhibitions and Hand of Artists are keen for visitors to get involved too. “At the exhibition we want visitors to have a go at designing their own cards and have them on display too,” says Grant.

The first exhibition will be held at Nucleus Arts 272 High Street Chatham ME4 4BP from the 4-8 July and admission is free.

We need to raise funds to get this project running in printing the artist artwork into playing cards to sell to raise money for the Local Art inclusive Charities.

Our creative outcome is that we wanted to inspire and challenge artist and non artist of all ages and back grounds to be creative, have fun and raise money for local art based charities. We wish to create lasting links between artists, charities and the wider community. Creating an original art project which is widely distributed cementing the important role of art as a force for good in the community.

Below are the links to the Project Website, Face book page where you will find the links to the Charities we are Supporting.

Thank you,

Hand Of Artists. Duncan Grant & Victoria Hayman.

Save Fuse Festival – Protest At Meeting on 26th February 6.30pm – St Mary’s Island Chatham

Creative and Art News

2821517344

The Fuse Festival is the best free entertainment and community-bonding event I have experienced in Medway. Over the last few years, the Fuse Festival has grown hugely in stature and regard, and I truly felt that it would become a jewel in Medway’s crown, something that seemed to be heading for national recognition before the end of the decade.

Fuse brings colourful sights and sounds to Medway’s open spaces, from vibrant street theatre to world-class dance and circus acts. Fuse Festival is a free celebration of arts that is different, diverse and daring. The aim to showcase some of the best emerging and established performers from across Medway and Europe. They are also working with hundreds of local residents from many community groups. Fuse is a free celebration bringing everyone together.

In 2014, Fuse marked the anniversary of the First World War with a family friendly show telling the untold stories of the Medway area created specially for Fuse by the Central School of Speech and Drama – Home Fires.

Fuse attracts the very best performers and artists – from home-grown talent to international companies and is supported by the Arts Council’s Grants for the Arts Scheme and Medway Council.

I feel this proposed budget cut is a prime example of why this Conservative-led council are out of touch with what real people in Medway want and need. You can sign the Change petition at https://www.change.org/p/medway-council-protest-against-medway-council-s-plan-to-terminate-the-fuse-festival but you can petition in person at the councils meeting.

The public can attend the council’s meeting to voice their opinion about The Fuse Festival and show support. Thurs Feb 26th at St Georges Centre (St Marys Island), doors at 6.30 for 7pm

NOTHINGNESS – Art Exhibition By Christopher Sacre – 27th September to 9th October 2014 – Chatham

Creative and Art Events

SACRE Nothingness E-FLIER

‘Nothingness’ – an exhibition featuring new work by artist Christopher Sacre.

Artist Christopher Sacre has created a new sculptural ‘lifeform’ that will be first shown at Nucleus Arts Chatham Gallery in September as the focal point of his latest exhibition, NOTHINGNESS.

The sculpture, whose exact appearance will remain a mystery until the exhibition opens, references society’s response to difference and provides a focus for exploration of the dynamic relationship of the Deaf community to mainstream society.

The new work develops ideas first explored in his successful ‘See What This Man Gave Birth to After Using 2000 Condoms in 22 Days’ installation in 2010, which Christopher exhibited at venues across South East England and London. The piece marked a turning point in his
work and introduced his ‘babies’ to the world – sculptural forms made by pouring liquid plaster into condoms. NOTHINGNESS unveils the next stage of evolution, a sculptural ‘child’ that will take it’s meaning in part from the responses it provokes and how viewers connect emotionally, intellectually and imaginatively with it.

Christopher is passionate about using his art to stimulate wider interest, discussion and debate about the complex and problematic nature of being Deaf in society. He expands upon issues that inform the work:

“Through recent funding cuts many significant educational and cultural institutions have been lost, which have been vital focal points for this community. This stripping away of the cultural fabric of the community has left Deaf people increasingly at risk of losing their rich cultural heritage. What will be left for future generations?

How will the audience reflect upon the sculpture? Will the ‘child’ be left isolated as society flows around it?”

NOTHINGNESS runs from 27th September to 9th October 2014 at

Nucleus Arts Chatham Gallery, 272 High Street, Chatham, Kent ME4 4BP
(diagonally opposite Iceland). Admission is free. Please see www.nucleusarts.com for opening times.

There is an exhibition preview on Friday 26th September, 6-9pm – all welcome.

NOTHINGNESS is supported using public funding by the National Lottery
through Arts Council England.

Chatham Waters – Art Wall Competition – Closes 20th August 2014 – Proceed With Caution

Creative Opportunities

AED-21-XX-X-001 - REVA - Proposed Elevations

Community engagement means the community are involved in the creation of something. This project is asking for someone to design something and volunteer their artistic talents for the community – without any engagement with the community mentioned. You know, that art we all love where no one knows why it is there and so it gets destroyed or forgotten about within a short amount of time. To top it all off, you need to read a huge brief (or tender as they are often called) in order to enter this competition that gives you nothing in return, apart from you being able to look at it and say “I designed that”.

Peel Land & Properties have been working to create a vision for the future development of the 14.9 hectare Chatham Waters site which sits between Pier Road and the existing Chatham waterfront in Medway.  The vision of the Chatham Waters master plan is one of a scheme that is respectful of its context but re-energises the Chatham waterfront, creating a new vibrant quarter that relates, but does not compete with Chatham. With the completion of this scheme Chatham should see a complete renewal of its waterfront, providing a social promenade that unifies the whole of the area.

This competition offers a unique opportunity to be part of the new Chatham Waters development by creating a series of artworks that will sit along the northern edge of Phase 1 of the scheme. This will be achieved by using perforations in the specified metal panels to create an exciting graphical design along the walls. The graphical design of the metal panels should create an engaging artwork intervention which will act as an important pedestrian gateway not only to Phase 1 of the development but into the master plan development as a whole.

The artwork should draw its influences from the sites rich history, current context and the future development plans that will see the vision of the Chatham Waters delivered as a scheme that is respectful of its context but re-energises the Chatham waterfront. With the completion of this scheme Chatham should see a complete renewal of its waterfront, providing a social promenade that unifies the whole of the area.

All proposals should take into account a value for money approach to the art work ensuring that a cost effective approach to the design is taken.

The winning artist/designer will be supported by AHR Architects to help enable the design to be developed in such a way that it is implementable. As such potential applicants should be available for meetings and telephone calls throughout the construction drawing and material procurement phase of the development (even though you won’t be getting paid, because you don’t have a job do you? So your boss won’t mind!)

Applicants should refer to the information submitted for planning approval for more information on both the masterplan and phase 1 development sites. This information is available for viewing on the Medway planning portal application number MC/13/1806.

Site Visit – July 2014

Before submitting a proposal, artists are invited to attend a site visit on the Thursday 7th August 2014. At either a morning (10am) or afternoon (2pm) session. On this date interested parties will be given a tour of the site, will have the scheme explained to them in greater detail and have the opportunity to ask questions about the masterplan development as well as the competition.

To ensure you are allocated a place on this day and to receive more details about the agenda for the day please email CWcomp@AHR-global.com

1// INTRODUCTION

Peel Land & Properties have been working to create a vision for the future development of the 14.9 hectare Chatham Waters site which sits between Pier Road and the existing Chatham waterfront.

+ A Place to Live.

+ A Place to Work.

+ A Place to Play.

+ A Place to meet a Friend.

Chatham Waters – Aspirations

+ To create a world class, employment led, mixed use community with a distinct sense of identity.

+ To develop Chatham in a sustainable way – environmentally, socially and economically.

+ To create a new place within Chatham which compliments the towns existing character and infrastructure.

+ To create a community which uplifts the spirits.

+ To create a deliverable project enhancing Chatham’s economic future.

The Masterplan

The master plan endeavours to achieve its aspirations in the following way –

Mending the Connections

The aim is to allow Chatham Waters to become a key destination on the waterfront, linking both the Marina to the East and Chatham Quays to the west, whilst drawing people from the University. The site should be seen as part of a much larger masterplan for the area, creating new pedestrian and cycle route links to the neighbouring Berkeley Homes development and establishing new connections through the development and integrating the site with the urban context.

Site Assets

The site has a number of natural assets. Firstly it holds a prominent position to the waterfront and dock side which should be capitalised. Secondly the site addresses Pier Road directly offering unique commercial value and access to the development.

Central Spine

The intention is to drag the commercial frontage from Pier Road into the site. This will provide both clear commercial addresses and the opportunity for a central park and destination and a key new local amenity with a ‘sense of place’.

Public Spaces

Key new public spaces have been created at each end of the proposed central Park. The spaces contain new public buildings which act as vista, framing views.

Permeability and Hierarchy

The acknowledgement of the need for both permeability and spatial hierarchy within the masterplan is fundamental. Small, medium, large and extra-large spaces have been created with complimentary functions.

Phase1 –

Phase 1 of the development is comprised of a number of works which include upgrading the infrastructure in to the site to accommodate future phases of development, the construction of a foodstore (Asda) and associated car parking, the integration of pedestrian links & public spaces including the central greenspace. Phase 1 of the Chatham Waters development achieved planning approval in 2013 and works are currently being undertaken on the site to enable the construction of the development.

The location of the foodstore affords the opportunity to develop some strong pedestrian links into both phase 1 and the wider masterplan site. The east-west links through the food store site and to the rear of the foodstore site will set a precedent for the future development of the masterplan and as such are key elements of Phase 1. The key gateway proposed to the north east corner of the food store site will link the eastern edge of the development with the new public square which will sit at the heart of the master plan. Therefore views to the northern edge of the food store site should seek to define this main pedestrian thoroughfare.

As the rear elevation of the store sits directly adjacent to this very prominent thoroughfare into the heart of the Chatham Waters development, this elevation should be active and visually interesting and should positively address the pedestrian activity within the street scape. As it is not feasible to put glazing on the rear elevation of the store at pedestrian level and as the sprinkler tank and plant facilities are located along the rear elevation, creating this active and exciting environment was a challenge.

Northern Art Wall Shared Street

The Northern East-West route is a shared street. The street has been designed to fully accommodate service vehicles accessing the rear of the superstore, and will ensure access to the future energy centre and multi-storey car park. It is our intention that this street should be a pedestrian dominated environment due to its proximity to the future ‘Wharf Area’ and Victory Pier. The street will have flush kerbs and demarcated pedestrian safe routes to ensure full accessibility. Areas of paving have been utilised along this route to visually ‘squeeze’ the perceived extent of vehicular access helping to reduce the carriageways dominance. A single row of street lighting and a street furniture ‘zone’ will help to define a ‘safe’ route along the northern edge of the street fronting the future Energy Centre, although the full width of the street will be perceived as pedestrian priority.

The chosen architectural design solution for this area makes a feature of the visible sprinkler tank and rear wall elevation. In this design, panels of vertical timber fins are interspersed between perforated metal panels. It is envisaged that these perforations could be designed in such a way to showcase artwork or specialist graphics. These patterned perforated panels would introduce activity and vibrancy to the street scene and create a unique space in keeping with the vision for the development as a whole & define it as an entrance in to the Chatham waterfront.

The series of ‘Artwork’ walls will provide a lively, inviting backdrop to the street scene, screening the supermarket service yard, making the route engaging to users and provide the street with a strong identity making it a fitting gateway in to not only Phase 1 but the future development of the Chatham waters Masterplan. It is envisaged that this art work would make a strong historical reference whilst also being future focused on the exciting and vibrant environment that the Chatham Waters development will bring.

2// Brief

As such potential applicants should be available for meetings and telephone calls throughout the construction drawing and material procurement phase of the development.

Applicants should refer to the information submitted for planning approval for more information on both the masterplan and phase 1 development sites. This information is available for viewing on the Medway planning portal application number MC/13/1806.

The artwork wall metal panel imagery should be designed in line with the specified drawings, construction details and specifications attached to this brief and outlined below.–

– AED-21-XX-X-008 – External Feature Fence Details

– AED-21-XX-X-001 – REVA – Proposed Elevations

Crying For a Dream – Video Installation – 28th June 2014 – Sun Pier House – Chatham

Creative and Art Events

SPH CFAD Online

Crying for a Dream – Kent based video and performance artist Nikolai Deaves brings vision quests to the 21st Century.

Artist and filmmaker Nikolai Deaves will be exhibiting an interactive installation from The Lost Rites collective on Saturday 28th June from 6:30-10:00pm at Sun Pier House, Chatham.

Kent based artist and filmmaker Nikolai Deaves, a 2011 graduate from the University for the Creative Arts, will be exhibiting his cinematic style of performance art at Sun Pier House on the 28th of June. The artist who calls his second home Taiwan, has also worked across the hostile borders of Jordan performing his latest series The Lost Rites. His filmic and narrative performance work investigates themes of grief, identity and culture; looking at the absence of particular rituals in western cultures, the artist investigates their significance in being human.

Crying for a Dream, the fourth work in his series, follows a journey beginning at the coastline of Folkestone where the artist was left blindfolded. Over a gruelling 30 hours, Nikolai Deaves walked back to Rochester with a map and compass in hand. The performance piece, which was designed by social media, took responses through twitter and the artist’s website to design a vision quest and a pilgrimage for a 21st coming of age rite of passage. With the artist foraging for food, walking barefoot and submerging into the icy seas of the English Chanel, this interactive performance work reflects on societies disconnect to growing older.

Nikolai said, “This work really came from reconnecting with friends over social media, as we all struggled to grasp the next steps in our lives. Many of us attempt to mark the next rite of passage in our life by showing pictures of children, houses and cars. Success in adulthood was measured by money, coming of age seemed to no longer be ritualised explicitly by the community.”

He continues, “Aging in our culture is now seen as a negative, we hide our wrinkles and deny our wisdom. Direction in life is obscured by the myth of adulthood, no longer is this openly taught, made time for and acknowledged. Instead humanity forge on as grown children crying for a dream, lusting for a vision to show them their purpose.”

Documentation of the performance, which lasted over 30 hours, will be screened at Sun Pier House on the 28th of June. Doors will be opening at 6:30 with an opportunity to to view ‘Challenge 25’, a live and interactive performance piece by London based guest artist Andrea Morris. Sun Pier House’s Tea Room will also be open for a chance to grab a drink before the screening of Crying for a Dream at 7:30. Later on in the evening there will be a Q&A with both of the exhibiting artists.

‘Crying for a Dream’ takes place on Saturday 28th June from 6.30-10.00pm at Sun Pier House in Chatham, which can be found at Medway St, Chatham, Kent ME4 4HF

For more information please visit www.nikolaideaves.com or check out Nikolai Deaves’ Twitter feed.

Medway Open Studios and Arts Festival – Saturday 12th to Sunday 20th July 2014

Creative and Art Events

INTRA Arts

Medway Open Studios & Arts Festival (MOSAF) is an independent, non-profit festival, now operating in its third year and growing. With over 20 venues confirmed for 2014 the public will have a chance to meet over 100 Medway based artists in their homes and studios. The 2014 event runs from Saturday 12th July to Sunday 20th July.

The Medway Open Studios & Arts Festival was founded in 2012 by Heather Burgess an Arts, Events and Creative Producer, and it continues to grow, year on year. The MOSAF is a very relaxed festival, offering visitors a unique opportunity to meet the artist, see their working studio space, and even have a go at making their own piece of art.

MOSAF continues to attract renowned Kent artists, with such artists as Bill Lewis, Mark Barnes, and Wendy Daws confirmed to take part this July. As well as emerging artists such as Rosie Melville who recently won the St Peter’s Prayer Walk commission, working with members of Bredhurst community to design and create a series of installations for the St. Peter’s Church woodland area.

Speaking about the 2013 Festival, Wendy Daws said “It was a great experience joining MOSAF for the first time. I really enjoyed talking with visitors about various ongoing projects, showing films, photographs and in particular sharing the process of creating tactile art. This year, I’m sharing the studio with artists Lorri Thomas and Mark Barnes and we’re all really looking forward to taking part”.

MOSAF continues to support and promote the thriving artistic and creative scene in Medway. It is unique in that artists from all disciplines can participate, whether they work in a purpose built studio, or in the basement of their home. MOSAF has a relaxed and community feel for visitors, a pleasurable way to spend some time meeting local artists and exploring the creative culture in Medway.

2014 marks the first edition of TÖNE, the UK’s first festival of contemporary sonic and visual arts, taking place in its launch year in the unique and challenging setting of The Historic Dockyard, Fort Amherst and sites along the Medway River at Chatham, Kent from 20 – 22 June 2014.

This wide-ranging and stimulating programme of events will showcase a selection of the best new music and visual art on the international arts scene, marking the First World War Centenary through work that reflects the military and maritime location of Chatham. The festival’s theme A Meeting of Sound and Light also reflects the timing of the festival over the weekend of the Summer Solstice, an annual celebration of light that dates back to the earliest days of human settlement on the island.

Highlights include:
· 9 ambitious new national and international commissions challenging perspectives on the environment, heritage, and the future of public space.
· Choreographer Anna Koch and composer Mats Lindström will undertake an art residency on LV21, the last lightship built in the UK, currently docked at Gillingham Pier
· Australian artist James Geurts will build a solar light sculpture, marking Midsummer on Sun Pier
· Dan Ayling directs a cello tour around UNESCO world heritage site The Historic Dockyard Chatham, with Rohan de Saram, Lucy Railton and Olly Coates and the Musarc choir
· New installations at dramatic Fort Amherst, overlooking the River Medway, with ‘Twittering Machines’ by leading British sound artist Kathy Hinde, and Gunsgooffbythemselves by Ben Fitton and Dylan Shipton.
· New radio art commission from Sara-Mohr Pietsch
· DJ set by Max Reinhardt
· Morgan O’Hara, Jon Tilbury and Sarah Nicolls re-imagine the grand piano

Founded and directed by composer/sound artist Claudia Molitor and visual artist Julie Louise Bacon, the festival’s programme brings together local and international sound and visual artists, including nine new commissions, across sculpture, sound, dance, radio art and food art, as well as installations, broadcasts and public forums. A festival pre-programme will involve participants in a series of workshops, masterclasses and talks, linked into local arts and education activities.
