And in a collaboration with London’s Central School of Speech and Drama, a performance created just for Fuse will be staged during the Festival – Obstinate Oswald and the Monster of Mud – which the students describe as ‘a fantastic fable of terrible fates for naughty children and difficult parents alike’.

When composers and writers collaborate, what comes first – the words or music?  UCF hosts a conversation between Mariam Al-Roubi, singer, songwriter and librettist for the opera Mirabai, and its composer, Barry Seaman.

How does a creative work, such as an opera, develop from idea to tangible form through musical and written language? What is it like to adapt original text to produce a libretto? How do you ensure that you honour the original text (the opera subject, Mirabai, was herself a mystic poet, musician and dancer from 16th century Rajasthan).  How do you integrate newly written poetry? How does a composer work with a writer?  How is it different to working on an album? These questions will be explored and the dynamics of creative minds working together discussed, using musical examples.

About the speakers

Barry studied at York University, specialising in composition, and works have been produced and commissioned in most media, with broadcasts on Radio 3 and his music for silent films Tsar Ivan Vasilyevitch Grozny (Alexander Ivanov-Gai 1915) and The Life of Richard Wagner (Carl Froelich 1913) was widely toured in the USA. He has a special interest in music as a healing process. His most recent project is Mirabai, a large scale multimedia opera that combines ancient spiritual and romantic ideas with astonishing technology in collaboration with Musion Systems.

Mariam is a classically trained singer, dancer, musician and poet.  Whilst writing the libretto for Mirabai, she is also working on a number of projects, including her studio album. She studied BA (Hons) Music Technology at Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance.

About Mirabai

Mirabai is the third of a trilogy. The first two pieces were large-scale choral works: The Consoling Song (words in Sanskrit from the Bhagavad Gita; commissioned by The Brighton Singers and first performed in Brighton UK 2002) and Bhajans (words by Nimisha Patel and Elizabeth Newman; commissioned by The Madrigal Choir of Binghamton and first performed in Binghamton NY USA 2007).

In March 2013, The Lake, and Petals, two excerpts from Mirabai, were premiered by the Ealing Symphony Orchestra and the Krishna Dance was shown as part of the annual Kinetica Art Fair in London, presented by the Musion Academy. A short film of the Krishna dance scene has been produced, and directed by acclaimed film director, Tony Palmer.

Be Part Of Medway’s New Art Vending Machine – CreataboX

Creative and Art Events, Creative and Art News, Creative Opportunities

Vending Filter

An art vending machine, CreataboX, is being launched at Fuse festival on the 15th of June in Chatham, and the project needs help from local creatives to produce miniature creations to go inside the machine.

Items can include art pieces, knitting, poetry, stories, music on memory cards and anything inspiring that can fit into a vending machine ball. Creatives are being asked to include information about themselves in the ball as this is a great opportunity for promotion.

The next free workshop is at 6.30 on Tuesday 11th June at 161 High Street, Rochester. Materials will be provided. Book here – http://creatabox.eventbrite.co.uk

The vending balls are 9cm in diameter and you can also bring pre-made work to the workshops, where they will be put into the vending balls.

The workshops are being lead by local artist Richard Jeferies, who is part of the CreataboX project. Richard has taught a wide range of artistic workshops and been part of many local art projects over the last 10 years. Speaking about the project he says “I would like to see the CreataboX building a link between artists and lovers of art. With its pocket money price (£1) I would hope it can bring art into more peoples lives, and at the same time give exposure and inspiration to creatives established as well as just starting out”.

It is hoped in the future that funding will be available to commission local creatives for further vending machine contents.

CreataboX has been developed through Creatabot by a team of people passionate about doing awesome things in Medway. It was inspired by the art vending machine in Leeds, but was altered to be multimedia.

Twenty14 Presents : The Loft – Art Exhibition – Chatham Dockyard – 30th March, 2nd April and 3rd April

Creative and Art Events

Screen Shot 2013-03-25 at 21.24.47

From the University of Kent, a group of second year Fine Art students under the collective name of Twenty14 present The Loft. An exciting exhibition showcasing their current practice and artistic development. From expressive paintings to explorative videos, robust sculptures to engaging installations, this show is truly diverse.

This collective has responded in distinct and varied ways to the broad and complex themes of Abstraction, Narrative, Contingency and Performance. Echoes of each resonate within the media, technique and theory.

The Sail and Colour Loft was integral to the success of Chatham’s Historic Dockyard. Despite its closure in 1984, the grandeur and history of the building are far from lost. It is the only surviving Sail Loft of its kind and the artist’s working studios. Their own personal history is now being written into the antiquity of this unique building, which provides the setting for The Loft.

Within the same exhibition is The Box From The Inside Out. Utilising the industrious shell of a shipping container, a small group of painters and sculptors exhibit their responses to the same themes. The works explore the effect on surfaces through a manipulation of mediums.

With a unique insight into upcoming art in Medway, this exhibition is one not to be missed.

What A Young Artist Taught Me About Crowdfunding – By Crista Cloutier

Editorials

Harrison

It was Day 16 of the campaign and I had only cried in public once. Twice. Online crowdfunding is not for the faint of heart.

I’ve spent my entire career in and around the art world. I recently curated a touring exhibition of new work by Kiki Smith and Valerie Hammond. I have been a gallerist and a fine art print-publisher, collaborating with the luminaries of the international art world. I have sold artwork to nearly every major institution in the USA as well as thousands of galleries and collections.

But about five years ago I had what I refer to as a midlife “correction.” Desperate to become something different, I sold all of my possessions and used them as a ticket to a new life. I left my home in the states and moved to the south of France, devoting a year to discovering my own creative path, before moving to England where I really got down to work and became a writer and photographer.

Throughout my career I have seen how artists struggled and I knew it didn’t have to be so hard. So I began sharing with artists what I knew about how the art market works and giving them the tools necessary to create a successful career. I called my class The Working Artist and I have now spent the past three years teaching it throughout the world.

I’ve long wanted to turn this course into an online educational program, something that could be downloaded so that any artist, anywhere, can have access to this information at an affordable price. After spending nearly a year researching the options and putting a business plan together I decided to launch an online crowdfunding campaign to raise the monies it would take to film and edit the program.

The launch party was a huge success and I exceeded my initial goal in terms of donations. The next two weeks have been a whirling dervish of emotions and bloody hard work. At the computer constantly posting, begging, pleading, thanking. And when I’m not at the computer I am out on the streets handing out promotional materials, chatting with artists, lecturing, making connections, chasing leads. This month, it seems, will never end.

The biggest take-aways have been the lessons learned, the hard way, about staying balanced, about not being attached to the outcome, and about letting go of what other people think. Easy lessons none.

But it’s been difficult to keep the faith. Though I have been blessed with little moments of serendipity that give me cheer, each day that someone tells me “no” can bring my spirits crashing to the ground. And so Day 16 began. I was halfway through the campaign, I’d begged every friend, relative, and ex-boyfriend I knew and had raised just over half my goal. Now what? I was exhausted. Well-intentioned friends gave me advice about how I could be doing it better, but they only served to make it worse. I was having a crisis of faith.

Harrison

I was on my bicycle whizzing down a hill under a bridge when something caught my eye. A little boy was drawing with chalk on the concrete wall. My camera was at home with a dead battery. But I have a phone, I reminded myself. I hate photographing with a phone and I don’t photograph children but something told me to turn back. I asked his mother if I could take a picture. I tried to get a shot of him as he drew, apologizing for not having my good camera. “So do you just ride your bike and take pictures of things that interest you?” he asked. I nodded and he looked impressed, “I want to be like you.” What’s that? “An artist,” he smiled.

He showed me some of his other, earlier, chalk drawings. There was a large piece called “People Pasture” of a unicorn eating people. “But I don’t think that’s my best work,” he said gravely. His name was Harrison and he was 8 years old. His drawings filled the walls with their childlike graffiti, he’d even written poetry. “Faith. Justice. Believers matter,” he wrote.

“Sometimes,” he confessed, “I have doubts about my work.” Harrison wanted to be a famous artist. We spoke for a long time. He told me how it hurts when people don’t like what he does. I pointed him back to his own words, “Believers matter.”

I told him what it is to be an artist, how it’s important to always take chances, to make your life an expression of your work, of your self. I spoke of integrity. He drank my words in thirsty gulps. I told him how fame is a false prophet and how his life’s work, as an artist, is to work hard to develop that which lies inside and to always look for ways to express it, leaving everyplace he ever goes more beautiful for him having been there. “Like you do with these walls,” I told him.

He said, “It’s so good that I met you.” But it was I who was blessed. I told Harrison about my crowdfundung campaign and he encouraged me not to give up. “Look how much you have helped me today,” he said. “This is your work.”

I asked to take his picture with my phone and he made me wait so he could put on his glasses. As I left, he told me that he would be back tomorrow, making another drawing, should I want to visit him. “I will photograph you again,” I promised.

“Bring your good camera this time,” he said.

Had a great weekend listening to and making a bit of noise, as part of Tea’sMY Noise festival. Highlights for me were an energetic performance from Bear vs Manero at Motherboy’s Singerpora Lounge gig and Damo Suzuki’s sometime jarring, sometimes soothing, always facinating improvised vocals with Hand of Stabs, followed by a 25min conversation with the man himself, covering everything from the harshness of the Japanese penal system to the illuminati and airplane travel.

20130318-232829.jpg

On Sunday, we made it too ‘My Favourite Noise’ at Sun Pier House, learning about an interesting new music app, experiencing the mini accordian and I getting to play my Bleeptronic 5000 through Matt’s array of tape echo, reverb and distortion pedals. All this resparked a love for messing around with sound that has been kicking around since Uni and various s-deck experiments with mssrs Birch, Dale and Maine, exploring messed up samples of…

pARTicipate Medway – A Very Different Art Exhibition – Participate on the 19th March 2013 – 10am to 5pm – Chatham

Creative and Art Events

pARTicipate Poster

Tuesday, 19th March 2013 10am-5pm
Private View: Monday 18th March 2013 6-10.30pm

“The creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act.”

– Marcel Duchamp

pARTicipate Medway is an exhibition by three collectives at Sun Pier House in Chatham. It will inspire you to see the local area afresh. Spectators are invited to participate in installations and to get involved with events; become a contestant in a mock game show, or swap a book in a ‘knowledge exchange’.

They aim to question the boundaries, histories and associations of this site and to be inclusive; opening the ‘doors of art’ to the local community.

Curated by a group of second year Fine Art students from the University of Kent, each collective has responded to the theme of audience participation, resulting in connected yet diverse exhibitions.

Then and Now will enhance your appreciation of this cherishable borough. With paintings made by nursery children from the area, contemporary works from local young budding artists, live music from their resident band ‘Defunk’d’ and Medway’s very own venerable citizens, there will surely be something for everyone to enjoy.

The Playground Collaborative invite participants to take part in the creative process by staging a series of playful, humorous and generous scenarios. The opening night sees their space transformed into an underground club setting. The event programme for Tuesday the 19th is packed full of exciting activities, as they look to encourage community, participation and exploration.

“Twice in the Same River” is an installation that investigates the histories surrounding the tragic collapse of Chatham’s Sun Pier in 1885. It will be an immersive and interactive experience that plays with the senses, paying homage to the collapse. The installation will transport its audience on a journey back through time…

EVENTS SCHEDULE:
TUESDAY 19th MARCH

In the space from 10.15 to 11.15 “A Pile of Stuff” exists representing our lives and the art which may result. This piece of art is a subject of time, influenced by everything that occurs in life. The experience of creation is in your hands as we invite you to explore our playground as a blank canvas.

In a society where everything is monetised the balance between value and cost is skewed. “The Playground Book Exchange” (11.45 – 12.45) invites the audience to participate in the exchange of knowledge at no monetary cost. We only ask for the participants to give back something of equal worth. Since we see all knowledge as having the same value it is easily interchangeable. A book for a book.

“The ME Show” (13.15 – 14:15) is a video quiz show focused around how society has become subconsciously informed by various mediums. We are asking participants to question their social assumptions made about generational, class and ethnical differences among others.

“Beirut” (14:45 – 15:45) continues the theme of participation by holding a training session on how to play the game. In addition to the training there will be personal envelopes prompting action from the audience, testing the limits of their participation.

“Cabinet of Habits” (16.00 – 17.00) invites you to follow the path out of the norm, and travel through the uncomfortable zones of human habits and impulses. See inside three different cabinets and test how desensitised by society you really are.

My Noise – A New Experimental Music Festival – 14th to 18th March 2013 – Medway

Creative and Art Events

mynoise-620x350

An experimental new music festival arrives in Medway this March, which will focus on connecting musicians through various ways of noise making. Spread out over a few days, the festival will feature innovative live performances and participatory events. Some of the highlights include a live performance by ex-Can front man and Krautrock pioneer Damo Suzuki and Medway based aural innovators, Hand of Stabs, a live Twitter-based sound installation and a bring and share afternoon of your favourite noises.

MY Noise will take influence from the creation of experimental music scenes over the last few decades and will encourage experimentation and collaboration in the Medway area.

The festival is being curated by not-for-profit arts organisation, TEA Concerts, who in the past two years have been bringing internationally renowned artists such as Jeffrey Lewis, Grandmaster Flash, The Wave Pictures, Com Truise and Sister Mantos to the South East. In the build up to MY Noise, TEA have set up a new scheme called Band Dating to encourage musicians to meet each other in a rehearsal setting and form new bands. The first outcomes of these rehearsals will be showcased during the festival and the final event will be an open ‘band date’. They have also been involved in setting up a DIY music project space in the area for new bands and music projects on a budget of just £20. TEA co-founder, Louise Micklewright explains, “You only need a space, a load of old mattresses and some gaffa tape”.

Wristbands for MY Noise will be £12 and some events will be free but with limited space.

Project Whitebird – The First Art Exhibition In Space – Crowd Fund The Test Flight!

Creative and Art News

Screen Shot 2013-03-03 at 20.30.27

Project Whitebird is a journey, envisaged by an artist, designed by an
engineer, and brought into being with the help of a group of dedicated
people embarking on a mission to curate the first outdoor Art
Exhibition in Space*
(* or very close to it)

This adventure starts in mundane settings, as average Joe’s, and
continues into an expedition of hope, imagination, determination and
showing that no matter who you are or where you are from, you can do a
lot more to live your dreams than you may think. If only you get off
your ass and give it a good go.

To make this dream a reality and to make history, we need to raise funds.

What you are sponsoring:
By Sponsoring this project, you will be contributing to the mission of
becoming the first team to successfully curate an outdoor solo art
exhibition on the edge of space and bring it back down safely to
Earth.
The first mission launch will be a test flight. It will be crucial for
testing the equipment, computer programs and ballooncraft designs
involved with this project.

Test Flight Cost: £1000

For your £10 sponsorship you will get:
A “Postcard from Space” Sign with a personal thank you message on the reverse
+ A special sponsors edition of ‘Project Whitebird – The Launch of a
Dream’ a feature length film documenting the actualization and
fulfillment of the project.
+ Your name will be listed as a sponsor of Project Whitebird, which
will be documented and attached to this historic flight. (your name
will go down in history)

If you would like to support the project please transfer your £10 sponsorship to projectwhitebird@gmail.com

Thank you once again.
Please keep a regular check on our website www.projectwhitebird.com or
our Facebook page www.facebook.com/projectwhitebird for updates.

P.S. If you could send us a confirmation of your sponsorship transfer
that would be grand.

A little breakdown of the flight of the balloon is as follows:

After launch, the Whitebird Balloon will steadily climb at a rate of
approx 1000ft per minute. Depending on the wind conditions it will
slowly track across the country. The balloon filled with helium will
slowly expand as it rises, starting out at around 157cm.
The ambient air temperature will decrease to a level that will start
to affect the onboard equipment, mainly batteries. It will then be
passing through the Troposphere, the layer of air where our weather is
made around 10km and rise further into the Stratosphere where the
thermodynamics are in equilibrium and the flight should be more
stable. It will now be higher than any commercial aircraft (12km)
Around the mid Stratosphere, about 20km up, the temperature will now
be down to around -50c and the air pressure will be as low as
0.08psi. The balloon which started off at 157cm will have grown due to
the difference in air pressure to 750cm. Having reached an altitude of
around 30km the natural latex of the balloon will rupture, the balloon
will burst and the payload will fall. During the descent a
parachute will deploy and bring the equipment safely back to Earth
where, with the onboard gps tracking systems, it will be recovered.

During this test flight, one of the onboard cameras will be taking a
photograph every 5 seconds for the 3hr flight. Around 104 minutes into
the flight we should reach our maximum altitude. As the balloon bursts
it will leave the payload box housing the cameras, suspended, just for
a split moment, in mid-air on the edge of space.

This is the moment when your Postcard Image will be taken.

Medway Writer Wins Award and Commission From BBC Radio 4

Creative and Art News

Winners_of_inaugural_BBC_Writer_s_Prize_announced

Playwright and poet Sarah Hehir, from Rochester, Kent, along with published author Mark Wallington and first-time writer Simon Topping, have been announced as the winners of the first BBC Writer’s Prize.

Rock Me Amadeus by Topping and Bang Up by Hehir have both been commissioned for Radio 4’s Afternoon Drama slot, while Wallington’s comedy The Joy of Adult Education has been given a pilot commission.

The judges Jeremy Howe (Commissioning Editor, BBC Radio 4 Drama), Caroline Raphael (Commissioning Editor, BBC Radio 4 Comedy and Radio 4 Extra), Kate Rowland (BBC Creative Director of New Writing), Roy Williams (writer) and Miles Jupp (writer-performer) were impressed by the overall range and calibre of the drama scripts submitted for the competition, with Howe commenting “Sarah Hehir charts the developing relationship between a young offender in a Kentish detention centre and his teacher. It is tough, warm, beautifully observed and written from the inside with real heart. It pulls you into the worlds of the two central characters in such a way that makes you really care for them both, and takes us on a surprising journey.”

Talking about the award Sarah said “It really does feel like a dream come true! All those lonely hours writing late at night, wondering if I’m ever going to make people feel the way I want them to when they read a play – it feels so good to realise I got it right with this one. Hope I can write another now!”.

The Writer’s Prize was established to create a unique opportunity for new and established writers who want to write for Radio Drama and Radio Comedy. Over 1,200 original scripts were submitted to BBC writersroom, before the judges were handed a shortlist of 18 from which to reach a decision.

Screen Shot 2013-02-13 at 21.30.36Supporting UK craft and design from their Clerkenwell base for over 30 years, Craft Central celebrates the launch of their new galleries this February. Their interesting Victorian buildings have long housed studios, exhibition spaces and business advice for designer makers, but 2013 sees an exciting expansion of the gallery facilities in St John’s Square, enabling them to grow their programme of public exhibitions and events.

The inaugural exhibition is set to show off the brand new galleries to great effect! Coinciding with London Fashion Week, Head to Toe will showcase the best in contemporary millinery and shoe design.

Head to Toe will explore the craft process and skill behind the drama, impact and, often, fun of hats and shoes. With covetable work from an exciting and diverse group of 20 designers, you will find astounding sculptural forms and innovative use of materials from big names in the worlds of millinery and shoe design. Milliners include Stephen Jones, Noel Stewart, House of Flora and Emma Yeo and we present shoes from Marloes ten Bhömer, Hetty Rose and London College of Fashion Cordwainers… to name but a few!
